Michael Polk’s Path From Engineer to CEO

Michael Polk built his executive career on a foundation most corporate leaders never had, an engineering degree from Cornell University. The son of immigrant parents, Polk grew up in southern Connecticut with a fascination for science, once building his own weather station to track coastal storms that hit the region.

Though he considered a career in meteorology, his aptitude for math pulled him toward engineering instead. Michael Polk Newell Brands enrolled at Cornell, where he studied operations research and industrial engineering, a discipline his classmates in other fields jokingly dismissed as imaginary engineering because of its focus on modeling manufacturing systems rather than physical structures.

Cornell Roots

After graduating in 1982, Polk took a job as an engineer in Procter & Gamble‘s paper products division, supervising a papermaking machine on a rotating shift in rural Pennsylvania. He knew little about the industry going in, but the job taught him lessons about teamwork and interdependence that stayed with him for decades.

Three years later, Polk left the factory floor for Harvard Business School. He credited the MBA with opening doors into marketing and general management that a purely technical path would not have offered him.

From Classroom to Boardroom

That mix of engineering discipline and business training became a hallmark of Michael Polk’s leadership. He went on to hold senior roles at Kraft Foods and Unilever before becoming president and CEO of Newell Rubbermaid in 2011, guiding the company through an eight-year transformation that nearly doubled its net sales.

Colleagues who worked with Polk often pointed to his engineering background as the source of his methodical approach to organizational change. He applied systems thinking to sprawling consumer goods portfolios, breaking large problems into manageable pieces the way an operations researcher might optimize a factory floor.

Today, Polk serves as an advisory director at Berkshire Partners and as CEO of Implus, continuing a career shaped by the analytical instincts he first developed as a Cornell undergraduate decades ago. Refer to this article for more information.
