Kelcy Warren Makes Record $12 Million Gift to UT Arlington

When the University of Texas at Arlington announced the largest single donation in its history in 2023, the donor was one of its own graduates. Kelcy Warren, who earned his degree from UTA in 1978 and went on to found Energy Transfer, gave the school $12 million.

According to a university news release, the gift is meant “to help elevate UTA to the forefront of the growing resource and energy engineering (REE) field.” That program prepares students to manage the energy resources Texas depends on.

Warren explained his motivation in direct terms. “I am honored to give back to the institution that has played such a pivotal role in advancing my educational and professional journeys,” he said. He also pointed to a workforce gap: “Texas faces a critical need for highly skilled graduates who can manage energy resources, and this innovative REE program will help meet that demand.”

A Quarter Century of Support

The $12 million commitment did not come out of nowhere. Over 25 years, Kelcy Warren had already given UTA $4 million spread across 10 separate gifts. One of those established a graduate student fellowship named for Syed Qasim, a former professor and mentor. Other contributions backed Texas Tier One research initiatives and the Texas Business Hall of Fame Scholarship.

His tie to the university system runs deeper than donations. Warren serves on the University of Texas System Board of Regents, a post Governor Greg Abbott appointed him to through 2025.

Beyond the Campus

The UTA gift fits a broader pattern of educational philanthropy. Kelcy Warren supports schools from grade school up through universities, along with medical institutions and children’s groups such as MD Anderson Cancer Center, the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center, and the March of Dimes.

Dallas also benefits from his civic giving. His gifts of $10 million and $20 million have helped build and expand Klyde Warren Park, a 5.2-acre green space connecting uptown and downtown.

For a 1978 graduate who now serves as Executive Chairman of Energy Transfer, the record gift to UTA links the place where Kelcy Warren started with the talent his industry needs. See related link for additional information.
