Michael Polk Describes Private Equity-Backed Companies as Leadership Accelerators

Most executives who spend careers inside large public companies develop a finely tuned understanding of how to navigate shareholder expectations, investor calls, and the rhythms of quarterly reporting. What they sometimes miss, according to Michael Polk Newell Brands, is what leadership looks like when all of that scaffolding is removed.

Entering a Different Business Reality

Polk spent decades inside the public company world, rising through senior roles at Kraft Foods and Unilever before becoming CEO of Newell Brands. After retiring in 2019, he made a calculated decision to return to the executive world in a different kind of organization. In 2020, he became CEO of Implus LLC, a Berkshire Partners portfolio company focused on fitness accessories.

The shift illuminated something Polk had not fully appreciated from inside his previous roles. Private companies operate under different pressures, and those pressures shape both the organization and the people within it in useful ways. Michael Polk came to see Implus LLC not just as his next job, but as a genuine test of whether the lessons he had accumulated at public companies could translate into a leaner, faster context.

The Accelerated Learning Environment

What Polk found was that private companies, by necessity, push people to grow faster. Without the depth of specialist support common in large multinationals, employees take on more functions and face more consequential decisions earlier in their careers.

At Implus, that meant exposure to everything from sourcing and manufacturing to retailer relationships and market strategy. “They grow and learn by doing,” Polk says. Senior leaders, for their part, remain closely embedded in the work rather than hovering at a strategic remove.
